Passing the Rockies

We're still trying to figure out this one for the last weekend in November.

Road conditions and the fact that we'll be in a U-Haul, probably with a small SUV in tow, are the main concerns.

One stop we have to make is at my brother's in Overland Park, Kans., which is in the Kansas City area.

Spokane-Billings-Sioux Falls is the route I've seen before, but that was a piece of cake in the summer. It's also the shorter route by about 150 miles.

My friend Brad in Salt Lake City says to go Boise-Salt Lake City-Cheyenne. That's the way I'm leaning right now using his winter experience.

For the Washington locals, the beginning of the Boise route maps us to the Tri-Cities area (Pasco), then south to I-84 in Oregon. Would it be better to cut off almost 60 miles by going through Dayton and Walla Walla?

Any other thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Good Luck!

Where in Georgia is your final destination?

Atlanta. Then we'll look for living quarters somewhere in the north. My job will be based out of Canton, Ga.

But the eastern leg of the trip, I'm not too worried about. We'll probably go St. Louis-Nashville-Chattanooga.

Remember the Penski trucks get double the milage of Uhauls. If the timing / weathers right avoid Salt lake try pocatello-hwy30 to little america on I-80. theres not much between RockSprings and
Cheyenne we spent 5 hours in a blizzard in between so if its getting dark n cold dont push past RockSprings. http://www.dancingwolfphoto.com/

Cool, I have been to Canton before. Let me know if I can be of any help, and shoot me an email and tell me about your job when you have a little time!

Please call me when you're headed my way! I'd love to meet you all for lunch or coffee...or anything at all, really :-)

Samuel, thanks for the tip on Rock Springs. I'll remember that.

I checked for the closest Penske rental, and it's 75 miles away, so that is a no-go.

The scenic route on U.S. 30 sounds nice, and I imagine it to be a wonderful journey through small town America. But that's where I've lived for the past several years; the route will just make me miss it.

I have been lucky to live in one of the most scenic, gorgeous, beautiful areas I have ever seen. My commute to Colfax every morning and other roads I frequent are part of the designated Palouse Scenic Byway.

David, Karen - I'll be in touch.

Did I mention that I am in the Rockies right now? I've been between Denver and Boulder, Estes Park and Golden, CO the last few days. Looks like I am leaving just before the snow arrives.

I'd take the least "Montana"-ish route possible. Montana = massive snow, ice, etc.
150 extra safe miles are not an inconvenience if you arrive in one piece! Well, there's two of you, so two pieces. Or something.
Safety advice: Drive in the daylight hours only, on well-traveled roads. Take it slow since you're towing extra stuff. Honestly, I'd buy walkie-talkies and caravan: one in the rental, one in the SUV. That way if the rental has an issue, you don't inadvertently wreck the SUV.
Unwanted advice: I'm a utilitarian guy, so I'd say skip the stopovers, winter road travel towing massive amounts of crap is dangerous enough without taking extra time.
Either way, sorry to see you both go. The Palouse is losing a true artist. Best wishes back home! :)

Karen! How's the weather there? Does Fat Tire beer taste better in Denver?

William - another vote against Montana. Thanks for the input!

I love Fat Tire!! I made it home with one 12-oz bottle (well, actually it's in my bag in Chicago...but hopefully will be all the way home, as am I, tomorrow).

The weather was absolutely perfect today (79 degrees and sunny) but I believe it's supposed to snow within the next 24 hours.
